Something on Every Active Parents Mind: Kids, Education and Fitness

I recently came across this infographic put out by the CDC explaining how kids who exercise for 60 minutes a day get better grades in school. I think every parent wants our child to do well is school. Looks like if we keep our children fit they can be at the top of their class as it gives them more confidence too! In later years sports also help to keep them out of “trouble” at school.CDC Burn to Learn

Here is a short quiz to test your childs fitness IQ. I was blown away by the results. Continue reading “Something on Every Active Parents Mind: Kids, Education and Fitness” »

My Grandmother is a Model of Courage & Strength

Being that October is Breast Cancer awareness month I thought it appropriate to talk about a disease that will affect 1 in 8 of us women. It is a disease that I give to each year because it is that important to me that we one day find a cure. I do not want my own young daughter to have to face what so many of us are facing today! Here is a positive outcome of one of my own experiences with Breast Cancer.

Cancer had not affected any of my family members until two years ago ! My Grandma who was 81 at the time, worked as a nurse for years, walked on a daily basis with her trusted friend Joey the dash hound. Growing up she stayed away from the sun, never smoked and had always kept herself trim and fit. That did not stop her from being a statistic…she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Interesting enough, because of her age it is not hereditary. I believe the cut off is 75. Anyone who gets cancer after age 75 is considered old age. Who knew, I guess 50 years ago people would just die. With over 200 forms of cancer now I can see how that would happen. Now we live long enough to know what we have and then have to battle it! Foods to fuel you on race day

No one wants to fade out the last few miles

I recently came across an article written by Joanna Chodorowska who is a
nutrition coach, marathoner and Ironman Triathelete. As a marathoner myself I
found alot of what Joanna had to say works. “It is important to figure out
during your long training runs what works for you and what does’nt”. Most of
this information is for long distances but, some of it can be used on a daily
basis. Continue reading “Foods to fuel you on race day” »

Yay….Eating chocolate really is good for you…Happy International Chocolate Day!

Visit msnbc.com for

Chocolate…….! A new chocolate study from Cambridge University shows that eating chocolate may improve your heart health. To reduce the risk of developing cardiometabolic disease (stroke, heart attack, diabetes) by 30 percent researchers found that a diet high in chocolate consumption helped. One of my favorite is the dark chocolate with sea salt from Lindt. It is a little slice of heaven on days when I want a little something not to salty or sweet.
Check out Women’s Health Contributor Dr. Keri Peterson on The Today Show this morning explaining the heart health benefits of chocolate–and how you can take advantage of them without tipping the scale! For more information on how chocolate can benefit your health visit Lindt.

Eat to stay hydrated

Summer is here…and the heat is on. What are you eating to keep yourself hydrated thruout the day? We all know that water will keep us hydrated but, did you know that certain fruits and vegetables will too? 20% of our water in-take comes from food according to the Institute of Medicine. That is quite a bit. During the summer I try to eat at least one fruit or veggie with every meal. Summer is filled with water drenched fruits and veggies like watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, tomatoes, iceberg lettuce and cucumbers. For a complete list of hydrating foods, their benefits and recipes click here.
